Mr. D Wilson who lives in the Avenue inspects the tangled wreckage of roofs which landed in his back garden. Part of his own roof was ripped away by the gale's intensity.

A state of emergency was declared as a result of 96 mile an hour hurricane winds which had battered Sheffield and District. Four people were killed, Jack Johnson, aged 17 of Coldwell Street, Attercliffe; Mrs. Shirley Hill, wife of the Vicar of Brightside, the Rev. C. Hill, Firth Park Avenue, Sheffield; Mrs. Ida Stabbs aged 57, 112 Crookes,Sheffield and Mrs. Beryl Dickinson aged 19 of Balk Farm, Birdwell, near Barnsley.
